My journey in Tai Chi began in 2017, after becoming an ordained Taoist Priest, Li Fu, I began learning tai chi from a local martial artist. This experience ignited a passion for the art. Soon, I was offered the opportunity to teach at Amazing Place Houston, where I began instructing seniors dealing with Parkinson’s and memory issues.
The profound impact of teaching these incredible individuals – their motivation, responsiveness, and the reciprocal nature of our relationship – deeply moved me. This rewarding experience fueled a desire to grow both as a martial artist and a person.
Word of my work spread through the community, leading to increasing demand for my services from other senior residential facilities leading me to pursue Tai Chi teaching full-time.
In 2018, Baker Ripley contracted me to provide Tai Chi instruction at 12 different locations. This required me to train a new instructor, leading to the development of a strong community of passionate Tai Chi and Qigong practitioners. As we age, maintaining health and quality of life becomes paramount. Tai Chi and Qigong offer invaluable benefits, improving range of motion, balance, and overall well-being while mitigating the risk of falls and other age-related declines.
I developed a comprehensive Tai Chi for Health & Longevity Program, integrating both Qigong and Tai Chi practices. Qigong, with its focus on mindful movement, is highly accessible to a wide range of individuals, including those with limited mobility, as it can be performed both standing and seated. For more active students, Tai Chi provides a dynamic practice that strengthens the lower body and enhances balance through its graceful stepping patterns.
As my business grew, I continued my own martial arts studies, developing an Internal Martial Arts Program for active beginners and more experienced practitioners seeking to deepen their understanding of the spiritual aspects of martial arts.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented new challenges, but also new opportunities. I was approached by a client eager to promote Tai Chi throughout the city. This led to the creation of Tai Chi in the Park, a program that has brought free community classes to numerous parks across Houston, thanks to the support of local Park Conservancies.
This journey has been a testament to the power of sharing the profound benefits of Tai Chi with others. From teaching seniors to cultivating a vibrant community of practitioners, I am grateful for the opportunity to inspire health and well-being through this beautiful art form and throughout this beautiful city.
